The problem with reading a Toby Peters mystery is, when you are finished, you can never read it again FOR THE FIRST TIME! That is how much I love the series. The Porfiry, Abe and Lew mysteries are fun, too, but Tobias Pevsner reigns supreme!

After living in Sarasota briefly from 1996-1999, I thoroughly enjoyed the first two Fonesca novels. I have two questions about passages from Retribution. Starting on approximately pg. 133, Fonesca is visiting Lonsberg and Jefferson finds a shell. Fonesca takes it with him, stops at Flo's, gets shot at, returns the car to have the window fixed, and then returns to his office to find Mickey Merrymen there waiting for him. Shortly after, they proceed to the police department and Viviase is in posession of the shell (pg. 143). Fonesca notes 'the shell that Jefferson gave me yesterday'(I don't have my novel in front of me for an exact quote). I have reread this section a number of times and have found nothing to indicate it is the next day. It would appear that it is still later the same day.

In addition, when Fonesca and Ames take Mickey to his dad's house and encounter Viviase investigating the fathers murder, it appears as if Fonesca has to introduce Mickey to the detective(?).

Obviously, these two small questions don't detract from an excellent novel, but I wondered what I missed. Any answers would be appreciated.

Sincerely,
Scott O'Connor

Fonthill, ON Canada - Tuesday, November 02, 2004 at 05:54:10 (PST)Just finished "Now You See It." , having enjoyed it immensely. But...was it proofread?? There are 2 chapter 5s. On p. 30 (ch. 3)I found: "I went inside and headed for the stairs. On my left were Mrs. Plaut's room....." Next paragraph: "On my left was the parlor, decorated..."
And, alas, I didn't use a post-it to mark the page, but noted an instance when "ten" was printed as "then". Do you have a chance to make corrections before the paperback edition comes out???'
Keep up the great work.

I am a devoted fan of Rostnikov and also enjoy Toby Peters. However, the editing of the books is terrible. I read each book with pen in hand to correct quotation marks, continuity, and other misktakes. Examples in "Now You See It":

Last paragraph, p. vii: "Blackstone ...and a thick hair of billowing silver hair...", should read "thick head."

Page 21: "...scrap paper pilled..." should be "piled."

Page 101: "She poured me more coffee." But, on page 99, Anita served him "...Pepsi on ice..".

These sort of errors are rife in the books. As a retired police lieutenant(40 years in the business) I can tell you that inconsistencies in statements is a major clue that suspects are lying. Any good cop will go over the story many, many times to ensure that the suspect says the same thing every time.

In any event, when is the next Rostnikov due?

I enjoy your books very much. Therefore, I readily bought the new Mystery Writers of America book that you edited. "Show Business is Murder" was a big disappointment. Overall, it was a sad collection of tripe that should bring little or no praise to the writers. I will still buy your books, but please don't lend your name to this type of project again.

I can't wait to read the new Abe Lieberman novel! Abe is one of my favorite literary characters!

With all the current events that have beseiged Russia, I hope that Mr. Kaminsky has found inspiration for a new Rostnikov novel! Rostnikov and Karpo are just terrific! And Zelach becomes more intriguing with each book. Of course, I also want to know whether Sasha Tkach's reunion with Maya will have a good outcome and what the future holds for Iosef and Elena! Please, please give us another peek at their lives!
Thank you for enriching your fans with great literature and stories into which one can really lose oneself!

Bonjour,

I read Never Cross a Vampire a few weeks ago. It was a delightful romp in old Hollywood and I loved Kaminsky's thoughtful portrayal of Bela Lugosi.

I had never heard of Kaminsky before I bought the novel for $2. The French translation was only of medium quality and I don't think it did justice to Kaminsky's style. I'm going to buy the other Toby Peters novels in English.

I just want to thank Mr. K. for the many hours of reading pleasure he has given me. I only discovered his work a year ago, and have since devoured all of Lieberman, all of Rostnikov, and all of Fonesca. The plotting abilities, the character development and the atmospheric touches all leave me breathless, as does the scope of this writing. I am in my mid-50s, very well-read, and have never come across someone so eclectically worth reading since Asimov and before him Conan Doyle. Hats off to Stuart Kaminsky!

I have read all Rostnikov novels, they are great. I have read the Fonseca novels (all two of them) and am looking forward to the third. A minor plot, but major historical mistake in the "Fall of a Cosmonaut" -- on page 178 - Rostnikov's phone conversation with Sarah - it is said that the Romanovs were murdered only miles from where Rostnikov was standing. I guess that is literally true, but it is MANY miles to Ekaterinburg!

Keep the Rostnikov novels coming!!!!

I love your Toby Peters books. I too am a writer and have written a book titled “Murder at Columbia” also set in the Hollywood of 1943. Unlike Toby, my private eye Buck Ames was a former stuntman. My wife and I have read all of your work that we've been able to get our hands on (most of it, I think). We love it all.

In the latest Lew Fonesca novel there was mention of Chet Baker playing a "coronet". Maybe the publisher's typo, but Chet played a "cornet" (from Latin "cornu" -- "horn";
"coronet" (a small crown) comes from Latin "corona" --"crown").

I, like Chet did, play cornet and trumpet. I hope you'd do the same for me if I had a typo like this.

Thanks for all the entertainment -- not to mention the stimuli for introspection.

Dear Mr. Kaminsky, I am a very fan of your Toby Peters novels. Unfortunately, italian publishers seem to have forgotten this series (the last translation appeared in 1997, as Domani è un altro giorno - Tomorrow is another day) - so I had to strengthen my english and buy all your books since 1998 on the net (and it's better - even volumes themselves are far better edited). Just finished MIDNIGHT PASS & enjoyed it immensely. One thing: at the end I expected to find the reason Lew was laid up in Sarasota Memorial in the beginning of the book.

I recall Midnight Pass from the 1960's. We had beach parties on Casey Key's then undeveloped north end and we sometimes bounced along Rollercoaster road on Siesta Key's south end to "park." The route number on both was the same -- 783, I think -- so I always thought the designation was made before the pass was created. With Midnight Pass, boats headed for the Gulf didn't have to travel all the way past Casey Key and force two bridges to open, backing up traffic. Then again, so much else has changed........

In my late-ish middle age I've discovered that with the exception of a handful of straight fiction, the only books worth reading are mysteries, PI sagas, and police procedurals. Not only are they the most interesting, they're also the best written. Very lately I've discovered your books and have read four in the last two weeks. I am on my second Fonesca (going backwards) and have read two Abe's. I love these books, but have a great concern: Your publisher, Tor (unless you have a contract deal to deliver camera-ready copy that needs no checking), is not providing you good proofreading and, in some cases, editorial backup. Each book contains way over the accepted limit for typos; occasionally there are editorial misfires, too. E.g., Abe's son-in-law's first name changes from one book to its sequel. The first Fonesca is especially typo laden, to the point it interferes with the reading. I expect you've heard this from others. I'm a freelance editor, writer, and excellent proofreader. I would be honored to proofread any of your yet-to-be published novels at half-rate. Thank you for the joyous reading!

Just finished "Mildred Pierced." At the end of Mrs. Plaut's "Episode of the Silver Creek Ghost" I originally thought you were telling us that she is the product of incest. After re-reading it several times, my wife and I have decided the wording is ambiguous. Any comments?

We both love your work, especially Peters and Rostnikov. Thanks!

Hi, Stuart. Not so much a query. Just a note of appreciation. I have read many, fictional mystery/murder genre characters. I was given a recommendation ,on a website for your MIDNIGHT PASS. It is my first introduction, to your writing and to Lew Fonesca. I am now looking to read, both VENGANCE, and RETRIBUTION. I thought, until Lew Fonesca I was completley satisfied in my sequence reading of many other fictional characters. So, just to say, how much I have enjoyed MIDNIGHT PASS. Every event in that story, created suspense, mystery and interest.

Enjoy the Toby Peters books very much (my age group).

Looking forward to Blackstone book. Hope you've done your homework on magicians. I'm magically knowledgeable & was appalled by the crap Jeffrey Deaver wrote about magic in THE VANISHED MAN. Extremely inaccurate! Hope you've gotten some competent technical advice.

'Midnight Pass'-great story and an outstanding charcter. For those of us over 25 (a few times), Lew with all his 'baggage' gives us hope. He even in despair. He still has high standards for his fellow man, and he word is worth it's weight in gold. The audio book was read by Scott Brick is does add to your book. Thank you

A snowbird livng in Siesta village, loved Vengeance with Sarasota base. Suggest you add in Video Renaissance on Bee Ridge since Lew loves old movies--and they have more than 20000 titles. Owners have encyclopedic knowledge of movies-old and new.

Also hope Phillippi Creek Oyster Bar, off south Tamiami, shows up somewhere. Seems everyone's favorite laid back seafood place--unless it's Cap'n Brian's, just north of airport. Keep 'em coming! MHS

Just finished the audiobook 'The Fala Factir'. To say this is outstanding would not give enough credit. The characters and the hunor come right off the page. The briliant manner in which FDR, WWII, and Los Angeles are brought together keeps you attention. The only question is how can someone so young bring to life a time and area which has changed so much. I look forward to the other books of Toby and his team of characters during World War II.

Mr. Kaminsky - I had the pleasure of (briefly) meeting you at Sarasota Memorial. As a result, I (indirectly) learned of your novels. I checked-out your website: well-done! Then noticed the "Midnight Pass" info-page in the SRQ Tribune; immediately went to B&N for the novel. My husband & I took turns reading the book aloud to each other on our patio - your story is too fun not to share it with someone along the way. You'll be pleased to know Lew Fonesca's relocation to Sarasota has brought entertainment to many SRQ residents - we've recommended "Midnight Pass to everyone we encounter in town. We're also sharing your Fonesca novels with my sister's family/friends in Evanston who live at Monticello Place. Very Best Regards,

Yahoo Group for Stuart Kaminsky has begun. It is being run by none other than the amazing Mrs. Plaut, who by now must be at least 120 years old.

The tribute includes all the books/characters of the author. I am not sure how well it will do, but if you wish to check back on it from time to time:

She did not refer to Mr. Peelers as it might be too confusing at the outset. I expect she will revert to form. It was her or Sheldon Minck, who might post an entry or two before we are done. It will be fun it others join in.

I thought of you immediately upon finding Ancientfaces.com. It is a treasure trove of old family photos. No, they did not have a Plaut, but they did have a Platt and I think that somewhere in the distant past the Platts and the Plauts were one family, but then that was before Uncle Cicero was bitten by a rat on his birthday.
The rat had been drawn to the party by his wife's fine cooking, a family trait as anyone who has read about Mr. Peelers would know.

I am not sure how the rat survived after eating the cake or if any of it was rescued from the rat, but I am continuing to read the family history for these important details. I can only hope Mrs. Plaut did not ignore the Platts, even if they had been on the dark side of family history.

Sincerely,

Bob Baumann

Actually, I just need to get in touch concerning an academic query,
which concerns my research into Robert Siodmak's production of The Killers.

I'd be very grateful if you could make email contact, so that I can raise
this with you directly.

Yours with many thanks

I was about to write a second article recommending your books to the readers of our newspaper here in southeastern Wisconsin with the lead, "Now that I have read all of Stuart Kaminsky's books," when I realized I haven't read the two James Rockford titles. Damn!
Thank you for everything you have written. I put off reading the Rostnikov series because I thought the Russian names might be a problem. Of course they weren't. My favorite, however, is still Abe Lieberman. Maybe it's because I'm more familiar with Chicago than Sarasota, Moscow or Hollywood. Or maybe it's because Abe is my kind of guy. I admire your talent and appreciate your (there's no such word as prolificness, is there?) output. I was depressed because I had read all of Donald Westlake until I discovered your work. Thank you again. I think I'll get to work on the article before I read the Rockford books.

I have enjoyed reading many of your books and feel badly that I don't have access to your TV show.

In one of your Lieberman stories there is mention of a Barry Dunne. I had a friend in the 1940's by that name who lived, as I did, very close to where Abe must live. Did you, perchance, know a Barry Dunne who would now be 75 years old?
Although it might not be practical in this day and age I think you would be be quite good at writing Vic and Sade radio scripts. This thought came to my mind while reading "A Fatal Glass Of Beer"

I'm enjoying your "Murder on...Express". I noticed a phrase I think is very similar to one in an e. e. cummings poem about Buffalo Bill. The phrase is "How do you like your blue eyed boy now, Mr. Death?" Or did he take the line from a poem about the express? Or do you just like the phrase. I guess I always have which is why I remember the line.

I became an avid Kaminsky reader a year ago when I read "To Catch A Spy", and immediately thereafter, 3 other Peters books. I especially enjoy the Lieberman series, since I am a Northwestern U. alum and know the Chicago area (the tone and settings are wonderfully/scarily real), and the Rostnikov books. A request: I learned of Peters, Lieberman, Rostnikov and Kaminsky from my father-in-law, Dan Houlihan, a retired professor of English here at the University of Wisconsin--Stevens Point. He has written you twice to tell you his great admiration for and enjoyment of your work but apparently doesn't have the correct address. Would you please send him a reply, through my e-mail? I'll forward it, of course. Many thanks. I have just devoured Not Quite Kosher, and look forward to Mildred Pierced.

I wanted to mention also my reaction to the comment made by the young man who criticized you for deviating from the subject at hand, that is, the movie under discussion. I admire your patience, but at the same time, that young man was wasting valuable time and should have been made to understand that the asides you made were enriching and vital to better comprehending and appreciating the movie. If he does return (and I hope he doesn't) please don't let him disrupt the session again. Looking forward to February 25th. Regards, Miriam.

"Not Quite Kosher," the latest entry in the Abe Lieberman series, could possibly be the best. The action starts in the first few pages and latr takes us through the trials and tribulations of partners Abe and Bill. Kaminsky captures the neighborhoods of the Windy City's North Side, the detective area for Abe and Bill. Fans of Lieberman and Hanrahan won't be disappointed.

Dear Mr. Kaminsky - Rae Kridel suggested I write you. I teach at a small university in Sweden and am planning a detective fiction & film course - i've had students doing research projects on detective fiction and Uppsala had a dissertation on it last spring so it's booming. Rae thought you might be able to suggest some films. Have any of yours been filmed? That would be great.

I do like your stories and your novels. I'm often not so fond of detective short stories but quite liked the ones in Criminal Kabbalah and Mystery Midrash - changed my view.

Thanks for your help - and keep writing the Jewish ones because we're now a national minority in Sweden (of all places) and it is thus easier to teach courses with Jewish content. And I'm at the stage where I try to teach what I want to.

Best wishes, Michal Moskow

I have recently begun reading Toby Peters and Lew Fonesca series novels and have enjoyed them immensely. When I first saw the Toby Peters series I was sure the use of famous people wouldn't work but it does - extremely well. I have begun to get very acquainted with Mrs Plount, Ginther, Jeremy, Alice, Anita, Wanita, Phil and even Violet. Very enjoyable reads. I always judge a book by whether I actually care about the characters as I read a book. Stuart Kaminsky does a great job of making the characters come alive.

Toby "Peelers" is a great character, the ongoing cast around him is varied and well developed, the plots interesting. I so much look forward to each new book. I am curious as to your reactions to your first visit to Russia after having written a number of books about life in USSR and Russia. I have visited perhaps 10 or 11 times beginning in 1978 and as recently as 2002 and have seen many changes - most of which seem reflected in your books. I still think it must have been a revelation to see how many Russians really live - even more depressing in most cases than in your novels.I first read one of your Rostnikov novels when I was in Russia on August 2002 and when I got home I located 5 or 6 which I read on my next trip overseas. I really love the Toby Peters series, and have started to branch out to the others. As an old "Rockford" fan, (I grew up watching the show with my dad)I can't wait to start reading that series. Thanks.

Somewhere I read that you are head of the Film Preservation Institute or something like that. Is that true, and if so, is it in Sarasota? And is it open to the public? Also, have just started reading my first Rockford files book. I have had a love affair (unknown to him) with James Garner for years, and avoided these books because I loved the TV show so much. But you do a great job. Thanks!

Have enjoyed Mr. K's work for many years, with Rostnikov being by favorite followed closely by Lieberman. Besides the fantastic personal detail, it's great to follow the real-time changes in their families and circumstances over time.

I enjoy the Rostnikov novels. I have a streaming webcam site which shows a street corner in Ekaterinburg. I wondered if someone in America saw a murder occuring there and contacted the Russian Embasy if it would be a start of a Rostnikov novel.

I'm a big fan, but my Mom may be your biggest. She's read every book! (From my name, I bet you can guess which detective series is our favorite.) So, for her birthday, I'm hoping to get her either a collector's item of Kaminsky's or some kind of autographed book. Is there a way to purchase such things?

Thanks,

Three years ago I had a hip replacement. I discovered Toby Peters about the same time. While recovering from the operation, I kept sending my wife to the library for the next book. I hadn't seen a new Toby Peters for a while and I was missing him and his crew. I've just found two more and it looks like another is in the works. Keep up the great work. I never grow tired of this series. Thanks for helping me through a rough time with your wonderful talent and great characters.

Sincerely,
William A. Banks

Stuart. I am publishing a new book on John Wayne. I am putting some quotes about his films on back cover. I read an article on Legend of the Lost by you, reproduced in Tim Lilley's The Trail Beyond, and wonder if I could use your brief description about the way Ford, Hawks and Hathaway portrayed Wayne? We already have abook about JW out in UK. This one will compliment it.
